Episode #026: Happy Hour Day

Episode Summary:

Hello to all my holiday peeps, and welcome to The Happy Holiday Life! Today we will be talking about an hour all adults love, Happy Hour!! Lol, now today doesn’t mean you can’t include your kiddos, be happy and relax! And while you do that, tune in for some fun stories about happy hour and a surprise at the end!

Highlights

  • “Today is Happy Hour Day! And I want to encourage you all to GET HAPPY! And there are so many ways you can do that that can include grabbing a cold one for the adults and maybe enjoying a family “Cheers” with a flavored sparkling cider to include your little ones in on the celebration as well.”
  • “Over the years, the term became more about drinking than entertaining. According to a 1959 Saturday Evening Post article detailing the lives of government contractors and military personnel in the Caribbean, it was a term used for afternoon drinks in a bar.”
  • The Activities: activities during happy hour included boxing and wrestling matches, music, and dancing.
  • Stories: My father had told me tons of stories about how the sailors were entertained when they came back to port in the ’80s, and all I can say is that it was EPIC.
  • When Did It Become More Focused On Drinking?: According to the 1959 Saturday Evening Post, government contractors, and military personnel in the Caribbean were seen having a drink in the afternoon at the bar.
  • What I Love About Happy Hour: If you don’t drink, you can still be happy! You can play Pharrell Williams’s “happy” song, and dance like there is no tomorrow. I just picture the Charlie Brown cast doing their “do, do, do” dance, lol. So take some time and BE HAPPY!!

Show Notes:

  • Happy Hour: This term “happy hour” doesn’t have an exact traceable date when it began, but some say it can be traced to the Navy in the early 20th century. It is said to be created aboard the USS Arkansas to help relieve the boredom of being at sea.
